It’s taken me a bit of time to recount my visit to Algeria and Tunisia last year in 2022. But here goes:
This was not a cruise and not for the faint of heart and not for the grumpertons. Being with a small group was helpful and having some “interesting” fellow travelers along helped with the boredom, intermittent wayside stops, and repetitive landscape. Some of the places we traveled miles and hours to see ended up being a one-stop view of an abandoned market or a ruined ruin or…and this was interesting and weird…where Luke’s (of Star Wars fame) home was filmed at the hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata, Tunisia. Now, I have to say, this was in the middle of nowhere.
Playing Wordle and doing crosswords with my friend Andrew also helped with passing the time.
That said, we saw the most amazing Roman ruins better preserved than any I’ve seen elsewhere.
We had some wonderful interactions with Algerians and Tunisians.
We had a couple of feasts in the desert and the usual camel encounter.
